How it started

A tutoring centre built on tenacity

Welcome to Tenacity Tutoring, accompanying your child on their path to academic success. We're a Sydney-based centre specialising in Maths and English for students in Years 5-10, and we firmly believe in the power of tenacity: that determination and hard work are at the heart of every successful learning journey.

Our mantra, "determination meets success," embodies our commitment to a learning environment that encourages students to strive for excellence. We know every student is unique, with individual strengths and areas to grow - so we tailor our approach to each child, helping them not only overcome challenges but discover the genuine excitement of learning.

I'm wrapping up a double degree in Law and Computer Science at UNSW — which sounds intense, but honestly the best part of my week is tutoring. There's nothing quite like the moment a concept that's been confusing someone for weeks suddenly clicks. I've been teaching since 2020, and I genuinely love it. My HSC background in Extension 2 English and Extension 1 Maths means I know these subjects from the inside, and I tailor everything to how each student actually thinks. My goal is never just better marks — it's students who leave a session feeling capable.

Josh Sowmi

Co-founder · Head Tutor

I'm co-owner of Tenacity and an actuarial student with a strong background in advanced mathematics. I've been tutoring for five years and I genuinely love it - there's something special about watching a student who felt stuck suddenly find their stride. Outside the classroom, I've volunteered as a kids' soccer coach and done service trips to Peru and Kenya, experiences that reinforced how much I care about education and mentorship. I try to bring that same energy into every session.

I'm studying veterinary medicine, which means I spend my days learning about animals and my evenings explaining algebra, with surprisingly similar levels of patience required. I've been tutoring since finishing high school, working with students across Maths, English and Science at every confidence level. I'm a big believer that most students are not "bad" at a subject. Usually, one idea just never clicked properly, and everything after it got harder than it needed to be. My job is to break things down clearly, rebuild confidence, and make sure students leave feeling a lot less hopeless than when they arrived.

I'm a medical student at WSU, and I know firsthand what it feels like to stare at a problem and think you'll never crack it — so I bring a lot of patience to every session. I tutor Maths and English across Years 5-10, and what matters most to me isn't the mark at the end (though those do improve!) — it's making sure every student feels safe to ask questions, make mistakes and try again. There's no such thing as a silly question in my class. Watching a student finally 'get it' is genuinely the best part of my week.

Our values

How we work at Tenacity

We're committed to delivering the best tutoring experience to help students succeed academically and beyond.

Personalised learning

Every student is unique. We tailor our teaching to each child's learning style, strengths and goals.

Small groups, big attention

Classes are capped at four students with a 2:1 student-tutor ratio, so no one slips through the cracks.

Confidence first

We focus on building confidence and a positive mindset - students who believe they can, do.

Clear, honest feedback

Parents are never in the dark. We share what's working and what to focus on next, in plain English.

Genuine care

We build real rapport and act as positive role models - students work hard because they're inspired to.

Real results

Our mission is to help students reach their potential - better marks, and a love of learning that lasts.
